THE PROBLEM of littering has reached such proportions in South Africa that the impact on the environment can no longer be tolerated. One of the main causes of solid waste pollution is overpopulation in the sense that densely populated areas are often littered with solid waste to such an extent that nature is incapable of restoring the natural balance. Some of the litter strewn on streets, sidewalks and parking lots are removed by hand, but during a rain storm the balance is washed into the stormwater drainage system and ultimately pollutes the environment. THE SOLUTION- The development of a prototype solid-waste removal structure was done with the aid of several hydraulic models. These models were built, tested, refined and optimised to the point where it conformed to most of the set requirements. The prototype was constructed in a catchment area covering the CBD (central business district) of a town to demonstrate its practical application and prove its effectiveness. Additional model studies were undertaken to investigate variations in the application of the structure. These were applications in combination with flow control structures and sewerage related structures.
